Two Months Prior

Start getting rid of unnecessary household items. A good rule of thumb: if you haven’t used it in a year, it’s time to let it go. If items are still in good condition, consider a having a garage sale, or if you don’t want to deal with the hassle, call a local charity to come pick up your unwanted items.

Six Weeks Prior

Confirm your moving date. Choosing a mid-week, non-holiday date will save you money on movers and truck rentals. Decide if you are going to hire a moving company or do the move yourself. Start obtaining quotes and asking friends and family for help. Whichever route you decide to go, make sure your items are covered in transit by insurance. Moving companies typically provide a small amount of coverage, but it may be a good idea to purchase more depending on the value of your possessions. Notify your bank, utility companies, internet, cable and phone services, and any other relevant companies of your move.
